It provides crack isolation, waterproofing, vapor management, and support for tile, making it a top choice for both professionals and DIYers. Installing DITRA correctly is crucial to ensuring a long-lasting tile floor. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you get it right the first time.
Tools & Materials Needed
Before you begin, make sure you have the following:
✅ Modified or unmodified thin-set for Schluter DITRA (depending on subfloor)
✅ Chalk line or straightedge
✅ Mixing bucket and drill with paddle mixer
✅ Rubber float or wood block (for embedding DITRA tile underlayment)
✅ Sponge and water
✅ Schluter Kerdi-Band (if waterproofing tile floors is required)
Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor
A clean, solid, and level subfloor is essential for a proper Schluter DITRA installation.
Wood Subfloors:
• Ensure the plywood or OSB subfloor is at least 3/4” thick and properly fastened. The subfloor should be free of dust, dirt, and debris before installing DITRA over wood subfloor.
Concrete Slabs:
• The surface should be clean, free of contaminants, and dry. Fill any cracks or low spots with an appropriate patching compound before installing DITRA over concrete.
TIP: If your subfloor has significant movement or deflection, reinforce it with additional plywood or use a leveling compound before Schluter DITRA tile underlayment installation.
Step 2: Mix and Apply the Thin-Set Mortar
The best thin-set for Schluter DITRA installation depends on your subfloor:
• Wood Subfloor: Use modified thin-set for DITRA (ANSI A118.11).
• Concrete Subfloor: Use unmodified thin-set for Schluter DITRA (ANSI A118.1).
Mixing:
• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to mix the mortar to a creamy, smooth consistency. Avoid adding too much water.
• Let the mortar slake (rest) for 5-10 minutes, then remix before application.
Application:
• Using the flat side of the trowel, spread a thin layer of mortar to ensure good adhesion.
• Then, use the notched side of the trowel to comb the mortar in one direction.
Avoid circular or random patterns, as they can trap air beneath the membrane.
Step 3: Lay the Schluter DITRA Membrane
• Roll out the DITRA uncoupling membrane and cut it to size using a utility knife or scissors.
• Carefully place the membrane onto the freshly applied thin-set, ensuring the fleece backing is fully embedded.
• Immediately press the membrane into the mortar using a rubber float or a wood block, applying firm, even pressure. Start from the center and work outward to remove air pockets.
Tip: Lift a small section of the membrane to check for proper adhesion. The fleece backing should be fully covered with thin-set. If not, adjust your technique or trowel size.
Step 4: Seam Treatment (Optional for Waterproofing)
If you're waterproofing tile floors, you must seal the seams and edges using Schluter Kerdi-Band:
Apply unmodified thin-set for Schluter DITRA over the seams using a small V-notch or Kerdi trowel.
Cut Kerdi-Band to the required length and press it into the fresh mortar, ensuring full coverage.
Smooth out any excess mortar and air bubbles using a rubber float.
Allow the seams to dry before moving forward with tiling.
Step 5: Allow the Thin-Set to Cure
DITRA tile underlayment should be left undisturbed for at least 24 hours before tiling, depending on temperature and humidity.
If you must tile immediately, be extremely careful not to displace or damage the Schluter DITRA installation membrane while working.
Step 6: Tile Installation Over DITRA
• Use unmodified thin-set for Schluter DITRA (ANSI A118.1) for most installations.
• Spread the mortar using a notched trowel appropriate for the tile size.
• Firmly press the tile into the mortar, ensuring full coverage on the back of each tile.
• Maintain proper grout joints and use tile spacers as needed.
